Keeping the Church Inflated

02 May

From the Naked Pastor

inflatable church cartoon by nakedpastor david hayward

Only people who have worked or volunteered for churches understand this cartoon.

Only people who realize they exist to fulfill the fantasies of its leaders get what this cartoon is about.

Only pastors who finally face their exhaustion at keeping something inflated with hot air see the point.

It looks to me like a congregation working fulltime to keep the church building looking respectable. What a waste of time. That’s the problem that’s been making little rural congregations tired lately. Hence the call to work together on mission; ministry to people (not the jolly building). It’s good the people in the cartoon are asking their pastor for an alternative. A pity he didn’t help them realise an alternative earlier. But – better late than never.

“When we are certain that we understand how God is present in our world and have clearly defined the appropriate ways to respond to that presence, then our understanding becomes an idol and we fail to see God’s living presence.” Killen and DeBeer, The Art of Theological Reflection, Crossroad Publishing, New York, 1999, p. 5.
