The scarves of General Convention

Many delegates and visitors to General Convention demonstrated their support for women’s ordination by the wearing of green and purple scarves.  Perhaps you will see these scarves in congregations around Australia, and perhaps you will also see the wearing of small green and purple ribbons.

Wear them with pride and be a visual reminder to those who govern the LCA that the voice of members will not be silenced with roughshod treatment.  It is for the sake of the Gospel that we persevere.  One day soon, women pastors will minister to us and to the Church, when we will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Pashminas showing support for women’s ordination

Pashminas to show support for women’s ordination

Scarves in all shades of green and purple, ready for those that don’t already have their own to wear to “Alive 175” and General Convention, to show support for the ordination of women. Now to work out how and where we can sell them beforehand.

From the Facebook page: Women’s Ordination in the Lutheran Church of Australia.

She deserves nothing less from you

from Inspirational Quotes to Live and Learn – on Facebook

Are you waiting for women to pull themselves up to equality?  “It’s coming soon!”  “I hope those groups get their act together.”

It doesn’t work like that.  The marginalised cannot do it by themselves. It requires men and women of good will to speak and act on their behalf.

If it’s going to happen it’s going to need your involvement. The women are your sister, your mother, your daughter, your wife.  She deserves nothing less from you.

Women’s Ministry Network page – Version 2

Women's Ministry Network image

Women’s Ministry Network image

The Women’s Ministry Network webpage has been redesigned, thanks to Isabel Mason and Tanya Wittwer.  The site, is still a work in progress but, as a webpage is an evolving thing, additions will continue over coming months. Perhaps it’s a coincidence that it corresponds roughly with International Women’s Day, a day that seems to go mostly unnoticed in the LCA.

There are significant resources on the new website that provide the theology and history of the debate on women’s ordination in the LCA.  There are study-guides, conference galleries and women’s stories from Biblical days and today, as well as current news.  These stories need to be heard for us all to understand the importance of acknowledging women’s faith and spirituality, as well as their leadership and wisdom.  The days are gone when women are seen simply as an adjunct to men.

It’s a great resource and worth coming back to.  Bookmarking the site may be the way to go.

Here’s the site, one more time.

Leigh Newton posts to YouTube

Leigh Newton holds that social media is an important way to bring about women’s ordination in the LCA.  A few days ago he recorded a video which included reference to his experience of women seminarians and pastors from Wartburg Theological College, Dubuque, Iowa, where his wife studied for her M.Div and many of our older pastors were trained.

Would you consider making your own video and uploading it to YouTube? Women’s ordination has suffered because of fear within the LCA, and fear does not reflect the vote at Synod or the massive support around Australia amongst laity and clergy for women to be ordained.   The more we speak up, the less any fear is experienced as being real, and the closer women’s ordination will be.

We cannot delay until another Synod or wait another generation.  Ordain women in April!

Arundhati Roy

Arundhati Roy, Man Booker Prize winner, shares her wisdom on those without a voice.  We in the LCA, make connections to how women are silenced or unheard in our Church.

Some people will insist that women are not voiceless in the LCA and will point to the exceptions – perhaps to Linda MacQueen, the Editor of The Lutheran, perhaps to Helen Lockwood, the Director of Lutheran Community Care or perhaps to women principals in our school system.  However, it will be instructive to talk to such women for their assessment of women’s place in the Church.

While the secular world is discovering gender equality, the LCA resists such notions and unwittingly makes itself, on a daily basis, more and more disconnected from Australian women and men (who are increasingly seeing through the duplicitous policy on women and men in our Church).

General Synod approaches.  Despite Pr Semmler resigning from the Presidency, he will chair General Synod and will attempt to stamp his influence on the Church until the following General Synod in 2016.  Change will only come when there are sufficient votes on Synod floor.  Attaining a 66% vote is an enormous task and every vote is important.

Are you able to be a part of rising hope in the LCA?

Catholic Women Clergy Video

Ordain a Lady

Ordain a Lady

Ordain a Lady

Happy Christmas and Happy New Year!  It’s going to be hard learning to write 2013.  What a strange number it is.  We can’t even celebrate the 20th day of the 13th month. What day will couples now search out to be married on?  There’s nothing that approaches 12.12.2012.

After a short time away from the keyboard we return to sing the praises of women clergy and have to share this fun video published in 2012 (yesterday), celebrating women called to ministry.

It’s worth sharing on your networks.
